That way, Americans would be so angry with Egypt that no US president would dare order Israel out of the occupied territories, That is also why the attack started with the strafing-away of the Liberty’s radio transmission antenna, and ended with the machine gunning of the Liberty’s lifeboats by the Israeli torpedo boats.In the nick of time, the Israelis called off the attack because they realized the Liberty’s heroic crew had rigged up a new antenna, SOSed the 6th Fleet, and (likely) clearly identified the attackers as Israelis. Israel was unaware the US embassy in Beirut was also monitoring radio traffic, and had also identified the attackers as Israeli, and the attack as deliberate, not a case of mistaken identify..The Israelis lied their way out of it with the help of LB Johnson and the US media. The Navy big hats (including Sen. John McCain’s father) ordered the Liberty’s crew never to talk about the attack, on pain of arrest and imprisonment. The crew knew it was no accidental attack by Israel.In 1954 (I think) Israeli terrorists in Egypt blew up British targets such as schools and libraries. It was a false flag attack to make it appear the new president of Egypt, Gamel Abdel Nasser, could not control his own nationalist Egyptian supporters. This would provide a rationale for the planned joint Israeli-British-French attack on Egypt of October, 1956. The Israeli terrorists were captured, put on trial in Egypt for murder and terrorism, and executed. It was called the “Lavon Affair,” after the Israeli cabinet minister who dreamed up and ordered the terrorism.
