Got a radio call to assist a citizen. I inquired as to the nature and I was advised that a child had a bug in his ear.
I requested the callback number and I advised I would assist via telephone.
I called the number and the mom told me that a bug had flown into her son’s ear and she couldn’t flush it out. The buzzing sound was driving her son crazy.
I explained that she could take a flashlight and shine it into the ear and the bug would fly towards the light.
I also told her if she had any issues to call me on my cell phone.
About 15 minutes later, the mom called me and said, “It’s not working!”. I was a couple of blocks away, so I responded to their address.
I arrived and met the mom at the door. I asked her to show me the child. She sat next to the boy on the bed, explaining that she’d done as directed.
She picks up the flashlight and shines it in her son’s LEFT ear, nothing happened. I noticed the child pulling on his RIGHT ear!
Just on a whim I asked her, “Which ear is the bug in?” She said, “His right ear, why?”
I guess she expected the bug to fly through the kid’s head and exit on the far side!
I said with the hardest straight face ever, “Here, let me help.” I took my flashlight and shone it in the boy’s right ear and the bug flew out.
I couldn’t get back in the car before I busted out laughing! I nearly wet myself.
