As a police officer, what happened that made you facepalm?
So, once, I was riding with a trainee, and we see a couple of guys trying to push a car down the street, it looks like they ran out of gas. So we call in the motorist assist and call in the plate. But, then, being the good guys that we were, we put on some flashers, and then actually got out and helped the guys push the car the last 100 feet to the gas station. The guys thanked us, and we started to walk back to our car. Then the dispatcher sends a tone. Yes, go ahead, we are clear.
That vehicle comes back stolen from (nearby town).
The two guys were close enough to hear the tones.
We turned to look at them. They just kind of stood there by the car, smiled sheepishly, and shrugged.
So did we.
One stolen car recovered. Two in custody.
That would be a funny ending by itself. But another amusing sidenote was that the state’s attorney would only let us charge them with “criminal trespass to vehicle”. You see, they were pushing it, not driving it, so, somehow, by that logic, they didn’t ::: steal ::: the stolen car?
So that, then, is the facepalm.
